Life After Cigarettes Is Happier: Study

FRIDAY, Dec. 16 (HealthDay News) -- Not only does their health improve, but people who quit smoking get a boost in their quality of life, new research finds.

"Quitting is hard, but if you can actually do it, there are a lot of benefits that you might not have thought about," said study author Megan E. Piper.

"If you thought you'd have more stress, that quitting would put more stress on your relationships, or that you'll feel worse forever, that isn't the case," said Piper, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and its Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention.

The findings don't make specify how much of a difference quitting makes in percentage terms. Still, they show a definite gain, she said. Three years after stopping, study participants who had quit reported fewer stressors and improved mood compared to those who continued smoking.

Piper said she and her colleagues wanted to see if they could confirm assumptions about smokers feeling better after they quit and "put some science behind what everybody thinks is true."

One way to do that is to look at how people describe their quality of life. That's tricky, Piper said, since quality of life tends to decline as people age. Even so, the researchers figured they could examine trends over time by comparing people who kept smoking to those who quit.

The study authors looked at the results of surveys of 1,504 people from Wisconsin -- 58 percent women, 84 percent white -- who took part in a smoking cessation study that began between 2005 and 2007. Participants were assigned to one of six groups, some of them using a nicotine patch, nicotine lozenges, the drug bupropion (Wellbutrin), a combination of those aids or a placebo. All also received counseling to help them quit.

Researchers followed the participants for three years and tested their blood to see if they had actually quit. They also asked about self-regard, standard of living, relationships, friendships and other measures of quality of life.

The study results were published online Dec. 9 in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

Overall, quality of life went down for both groups, those who quit and those who kept smoking, but it went down less for the quitters, Piper said. "This is just a little bit of additional scientific evidence that things will get better if you can get through those first couple of months."

Although the findings don't prove cause-and-effect, the authors said they suggest that life satisfaction could be used as a motivating tool for people reluctant to quit smoking. Smokers die 13 to 14 years earlier than nonsmokers on average, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.

Linda Sarna, the chair of nursing at the University of California, Los Angeles, who's familiar with the research, agreed with what the study says regarding the value of quitting smoking. "The message is that it's not just about reducing your risk of heart disease or cancer, it's also about benefits," she said. "You'll get through this and your quality of life will be probably be better than if you continue to smoke."

The message is especially important now when people are making resolutions for 2012, she said. "They will be able to get over the loss of smoking -- the loss of that friend, the cigarette," she said.

Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in a small pan and melt it over low heat. Mix 1 to 2 teaspoons of each of your spices in a small bowl and pour in the melted coconut oil. Mix all the ingredients together. Let the spice and coconut oil mixture cool.

Rub the spice and oil mixture under the skin of the chicken with your hands. Once the chicken is completely coated, place it breast side down in a glass baking pan and pop it in the oven. Let the chicken cook for 1 to 2 hours until it’s done.

The Diet Solution Program Works Equally as well For Both Men and Woman.

Surprisingly, Del Rios claims that cutting carbs, eating low fat foods, and counting calories is more or less useless. It won’t help you lose weight. It won’t make you feel healthier. To the contrary, she claims that you “must eat lots of food in order to lose weight.”

It may sound strange, but this is the essence of her program:

It encourages you to find your metabolic type and tailor a diet to that type, rather than using a one-size-fits-all fad diet.

In fact, it starts by asking you to fill out a survey, so that you can determine your own metabolic type and then use it throughout the remainder of the program.

It’s important to note that Del Rios, unlike many of her contemporaries, is an actual certified nutritionist. She graduated from the University of Rutgers with a degree in exercise physiology and is certified by the NSCA as a Strength and Conditioning Expert.

Of course, this is also true of many fad diet creators, so it should not be enough information to silence your skepticism. Indeed, her credentials alone haven’t been enough to silence the multitude of critics who have raised questions about the program.

Some who criticize The Diet Solution Program suggest that it falsely attempts to de-legitimize useful dieting techniques, such as reducing fat intake and counting calories. Others who criticize it argue that it focuses too much on holistic strategies for weight loss-and completely ignores the ones that are backed by rigorous scientific evidence.

Healthy French Toast

There’s no need to give up some of your favorite foods in an effort to lose weight and keep it off. Here is one of my favorite weekend breakfast recipes that will still fit into your healthy eating plan.

You’ll see that all of the ingredients below are Diet Solution approved and completely healthy. How does it taste? Absolutely delicious. And that has been verified by my husband, my in-laws, my parents and several friends that have stayed at our house and enjoyed our Saturday morning ritual with us.

French Toast a la The Diet Solution

Ingredients:
2 slices Sprouted Grain, Spelt or Rice bread (we’ve tried using all of them and they all work well)
2 whole eggs
1 TBSP butter
Maple Syrup or Apple Sauce (no sugar added)
Cinnamon to taste

Directions:
Scramble the 2 eggs in a bowl large enough to fit one slice of bread. Dip the bread and make sure it is coated generously with the egg mixture. Heat a pan (on low to medium) large enough for 1 or 2 slices of bread and add the butter. Once the butter is melted in the pan (if it begins to turn brown, you have the heat up too high) add the bread coated with the egg mixture. Cook the bread on each side for 3-4 minutes covered (I find that covering the pan cooks the egg more evenly but you can cook it uncovered as well). Serve with maple syrup (1 tsp per slice is more than enough) or topped with apple sauce and cinnamon (that’s how I like mine.)

Is this a cheat meal or a meal “off” of my usual healthy eating? Not at all. All of the ingredients are wholesome and natural and fit right into mine (and your) healthy eating plan. If you need or want a bit more protein with your breakfast, you can add a piece of bacon, breakfast sausage or even another egg on the side.
